Since 1946 Target has given 5% of our income to support education, social services, volunteerism, and the arts. Today that adds up to more than $3 million every week. Additionally, our team members and retirees have volunteered millions of hours to community projects. This commitment is part of our legacy.
Since 1962, Target team members have invested in their communities by supporting the United Way. In 2008, Target and individual team members donated more than $13 million. Team members also volunteered over 29,000 hours with United Way-funded agencies as part of the United Way campaign.
Target Volunteers School Library Makeovers
Target team members get involved with local schools by donating books and volunteering to help with school library makeovers. These makeovers utilize the design and construction expertise of the Target Property Development team. In 2008, more than 500 Target stores took part in the program. In 2009, every Target store in 49 states will participate.
Target partners with the American Red Cross, Feeding America and The Salvation Army to ensure Disaster Relief Kits are distributed in a timely manner to those affected by disasters. During the year, Target team members volunteer to assemble these kits in preparation for a disaster or crisis. Two kit versions will be assembled in 2009 - food kits and toiletry kits. Food kits contain bottled water, a variety of snacks and utensils, and toiletry kits include a variety of pre-packaged, travel-size personal items most needed by those displaced from their homes. In 2008, 170,000 total relief kits were distributed.
Target uses VolunteerMatch to help team members connect with opportunities at more than 58,000 participating nonprofits. HandsOn Network believes change happens through people. The network’s 370 plus Action Centers reach over 80% of our nation’s communities.
